PART
IV: FETAL
The
Technical Director must have an appropriate credential in echocardiography
from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography
(ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).
Both the ARDMS credentials Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer
(RDCS) and Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS)(FE)
are appropriate. A credential in pediatric echocardiography
is preferred if the Technical Director will be performing pediatric
echocardiograms.
Two
new elements were added to 3.1.1, Elements of Study Performance
and Quality:
D)
Measurement of BPD, head circumference or other measure for
estimation of fetal size/gestational age
M)
Appropriate assessment of areas of abnormality
Laboratories
performing pediatric and/or fetal echocardiograms are strongly
encouraged to review the complete 2007
ICAEL Standards, and in conjunction, make any necessary
adjustments to laboratory policies and protocols in order to
reflect the updated guidelines. If you have any questions regarding
the updated Standards or the accreditation process in general,
please contact the ICAEL office toll-free at 800-838-2110.

In
conjunction with the revisions to the 2007 ICAEL Pediatric
Standards, a few minor updates were made to the
Adult version of Part I, Echocardiography Laboratory
Operations-Organization. Specifically, the requirement
for the Technical Director to hold an appropriate credential
in echocardiography was made present tense, as the requirement
became effective January 1, 2007. In addition, the Continuing
Medical Education Requirements for all staff were clarified
by removal of the statement discussing first time applicants
versus reaccreditation. The CME requirements are the same
for all applicant laboratories, regardless of their accreditation
history.
