Technical Director and Technical Staff

The average number of technical staff members in an accredited laboratory is four.

All laboratories must have a Technical Director appointed. The Technical Director must have an appropriate credential in echocardiography from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) by January 1, 2007 (figure 2).

CREDENTIALS OF TECHNICAL DIRECTOR:

  • RDCS (Adult) - 66.4%
  • RDCS (Pediatric) - 10.1%
  • RCS - 9.5%

TECHNICAL STAFF:

  • Total percentage of credentialed sonographers - 61.0%


THE WHAT

23% of accredited labs are granted accreditation for multiple sites and 9.9% of the applicants have accredited a mobile component.

The ICAEL currently offers accreditation in six areas of testing: Adult Transthoracic, Adult Transesophageal, Adult Stress, Pediatric Transthoracic, Pediatric Transesophageal, and Fetal. Accreditation can be applied for and achieved in up to six areas of testing.

The percentage of laboratories accredited in each area is shown here and illustrated in the chart to the right (figure 3):

  • Adult Transthoracic - 94.3%
  • Adult Transesophageal - 23.3%
  • Adult Stress - 44.0%
  • Pediatric Transthoracic - 5.7%
  • Pediatric Transesophageal - 1.7%
  • Fetal - 2.9%

THE WHERE

ICAEL accredited labs are located throughout the United States, mainly located in both physician's offices and hospitals (figure 4).

  • Physician's offices - 48.5%
  • Hospitals - 42.5%

The number of ICAEL accredited laboratories in each state is listed in the chart in the right sidebar.
