HEALTHCARE MEDICARE ADMINISTRATION
MEDICARE PART B
"The prompt acquisition and accurate interpretation of stress
echocardiographic images correlates significantly with the experience
of both the sonographer and interpreting physician. An accreditation
body, the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiographic
Laboratories (ICAEL), has been formed by the American College of
Cardiology and the American Society of Echocardiography in order
to review laboratories with respect to their quality in performing
stress echocardiography. The standards set by this body are accepted
as appropriate in ensuring the clinical skills of those performing
and interpreting stress echocardiograms. Medicare recommends that
those centers performing stress echocardiograms be accredited by
the ICAEL. All centers must be accredited by January 1, 2003 to
be eligible to receive Medicare reimbursement for this procedure."
