At
the annual ICANL Board of Directors Meeting held in February,
Gary V. Heller, MD, assumed the office of President of
the ICANL. Representing the Society of Nuclear Medicine, Dr.
Heller joined the ICANL Board of Directors in 1997 as a founding
member of the ICANL. Since that time, he has maintained an active
role in the Board of Directors' Executive Committee, having
served as President-Elect and as Secretary.
Only
the second person ever to hold the office of President of the
ICANL, Dr. Heller succeeds Frans J. Th. Wackers, MD, PhD, who
has served as the organization's president since its inception
in 1997. Dr. Heller acknowledges and thanks Dr. Wackers for
his inspiration and leadership of the ICANL over the past seven
years. "Following him as President is an honor and a challenge,"
Dr. Heller said. "I look forward to the changing role of
accreditation as it moves from a voluntary process to one that
is more and more required for payment. The challenge of the
ICANL will be to make the process of accreditation as thorough,
fair, and efficient as possible."
Dr.
Heller is the Professor of Medicine and Nuclear Medicine at
the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington,
Connecticut. At Hartford Hospital in Hartford, CT, he serves
as the Associate Director of the Division of Cardiology, Director
of Nuclear Cardiology Laboratory, and Program Director of the
Hartford Hospital / University of Connecticut Cardiovascular
Fellowship.
Upon
receiving his medical degree and PhD from Case Western Reserve
School of Medicine, Dr. Heller completed his internship and
residence at Boston City Hospital and University Hospital in
Boston, Massachusetts. His cardiovascular fellowship training
was at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Prior to moving to Connecticut,
Dr. Heller served as a faculty member at Harvard University
Medical School, Associate Professor of Medicine at Brown University,
and Director of Nuclear Cardiology at Memorial Hospital of Rhode
Island.
In
addition to his new position as ICANL President, Dr. Heller
is also the Past-President of the American Society of Nuclear
Cardiology. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal
of the American College of Cardiology, the American Journal
of Cardiology, and the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology.
Dr. Heller has co-authored over 150 manuscripts, book chapters,
and reviews, and is co-editor of Nuclear Cardiology: Practical
Applications.
